Capt. Jackson’s Fishing Forecast
LakeTohopekaliga (“Toho”) and Kissimmee Chain of Lakes

Winter Forecast: January, February and March

These first three months of the year are the peak trophy bass fishing months for the West Lake Toho Kissimmee Chain of Lakes in Central Florida. Close to 80% of the trophy bass are caught in the first 3 months. With the first spawn, which occurs during our winter season, Toho’s staging areas are alive with our greatest numbers of fish. This is when you have your best chances of catching Toho’s roe laden female bass over ten pounds. The winter months are an exceptional time for bass fishing, during our pre-spawn, spawning and post spawn periods. This time of the year, wild shiners are your best choice for catching big numbers, not to mention for catching the really big bass. Average catches for this time of the year can range from 15 and up and may even go over 30 bass per day! Numbers of fish that can be caught depend on the length of the time you fish as well as air and water temperatures that can fluctuate wildly this time of year with the passage of cold fronts. Because of this, you might want to bring clothing for warm weather and clothing for colder weather… You can never know what it is going to be like on the day of your trip. Also, make sure to bring a camera to take pictures of your Toho bass.

Artificial lures and wild shiners:
Artificial lures at this time of year can produce good numbers of bass of all sizes as well as trophy bass. However, with the passage of cold fronts, artificial lures can be a risky alternative to wild shiners. If you happen to be fishing after a cold front with artificial lures the bite can be very difficult. On the other hand, wild shiners will produce consistently regardless of weather. Whichever you choose, artificial lures or wild shiners, the winter months are the absolute best for fishing and are our busiest months.

To ensure you’ll be able to reserve one of our guides, you will need to make your reservation as early as possible.
Two to three months in advance is best. If you wait too long, you might not find us available for your ideal dates… but give us a call to check.

Hope to see you real soon with a big bass in your hand and a smile to match!

--------------------------------

Fall Forecast: October, November, and December In Florida:

This is the season when the dog days of summer draw to an end with the beginning of October just around the corner, we gradually ease into fall. With the passage of several cold fronts, lake conditions begin to change. Water temperatures dip back into the 70s and water levels rise, approaching normal once again, which energizes the fish population in our Central Florida lakes. The Florida largemouth bass finds new vigor, and both fish and fishermen become more active.

Choice of Bait During the fall months: We fish the hydrilla and maiden-cane grass fields in 3 to 6 feet of water. Artificial lures and wild shiners both work well at this time of the year. But, if it’s lunker bass you’re after, wild shiners produce the really big ones. This doesn’t mean that you can’t catch trophy bass on artificial lures – you can – just not as frequently as with shiners. However, if fishing with artificials is your choice, it’s best to use only weed less baits: plastic worms, soft-jerk baits, spoons, and top water lures because  the grass is very heavy.

Pre-spawn: As water temperatures approach the low- to mid-seventies, the bass begin to group in pre-spawn staging areas, setting the scene for a lot of action at these locations. Fishing Toho in the fall becomes a more productive and enjoyable endeavor because you don’t have  to run all over the lake, catching one fish here and another there. You can spend more time fishing in each location.

Average Catches On a good day at this time of year: Catches of 15-29 bass are common, with catches of 5 to 6 pound bass a daily occurrence. When it comes to bass in the 10+ pound class, it is not unusual to produce a couple each week. (As always, your personal statistics can be better or worse, depending on weather conditions.) And, for every bass you catch over 10 pounds, you can expect to lose one or two in the heavy grasses. Nevertheless, the months of October, November, and December offer you plenty of opportunity to hook big bass; but it’s up to you to get them in the boat!

LakeToho: #1 TrophyBassLake in USA! If you’re hoping to catch some trophy bass during the next few months, your odds are better at LakeTohopekaliga than anywhere else in the nation. So, come on down and treat yourself to the bass fishing trip of a lifetime! [Note: With the popularity of Florida fishing on the rise across the United States and abroad, it is important to book your guide trips as early as possible. The sooner you book, the more likely you will get the dates you prefer.]

----------------------------------------

Summer Forecast: July, August, and September:

If you’re hoping to catch your trophy of a lifetime during the next few weeks, your odds are better here at Lake Tohopekaliga than anywhere else. Why? Because Toho is the Number #1 trophy bass fishing lake in the nation! Although this is not our peak season for catching trophy-size bass in Florida, that does not mean you can't catch a 10 pounder at this time of year -- because you can!

Lake water levels have been lowered about 3 feet to avoid flooding from the heavy, late-afternoon thunderstorms we experience during our summer rainy season. The lower water levels force the bass out ofthe maiden-cane grass fields and concentrate them in open-water hydrilla fields. In this open-water environment, the bass become more active and fishing becomes more productive (at certain times of the day).

During July, August, and September, water temperatures at Lake Toho and the Kissimmee Chain of Lakes range from the low 80s to the upper 80s. Sometimes they even rise into the 90s. We have some of the best
fishing of the year during the summer, but only during the
ke up in numbers.

As for artificials, we have found top-water lures to be the most productive. Here are our favorites: plastic worms, crank baits, soft jerk baits, rattletraps, spoons, and buzz baits. Keep in mind, however, that bass can be moody with artificials when water or weather conditions are not to their liking. If that appears to be the case, you may want to switch from artificials to wild shiners.

Important Message From the Captain: With the growing popularity of trophy bass fishing in Florida, it is extremely important for you to make your reservations for a bass fishing guide trip. as far in advance as possible. That way you’ll have a better chance to get the date or dates you prefer.

...I’ve seen the article in IN-FISHERMAN MAGAZINE with your picture. I think it is great that you are getting such recognition. I was down in June with my nephew. He caught an 8 LB bass. We had a great time. We are planning another trip in March!"
